Mid way along the Oilrig Road between Largs Avenue and the junction of Power Station Road you will come across two metal gates on each side of the road painted red and white. These are gates that are closed in the event of an emergency situation occurs at the power stations.
They have only ever been closed once and that was during a simulated evacuation test of Hunterston A station in the early 1980s, ever since they have always remained locked in an open position.
If they were ever to be used the gates would be closed and an armed nuclear police officer would stand guard stopping any vehicular access to the area beyond that point.
The gates were originally located at Poteath Bridge on the Power Station Road but was relocated to the current position in 1994 when both roads were realigned.
